        <purpose>The purpose of this matrix is the support of an acoustic recognition model for bats.</purpose>
        <introduction>This matrix is based on the book Fledermäuse Europas (Dietz &amp; Kiefer, 2014). The distributions shown in this field guide were expanded a little, as the aim of this matrix is to support an acoustic recognition model. This way, the matrix shows all possible species which can be recorded per country, not just the proven occurrences.</introduction>
        <gettingStarted>As the distribution maps can be unclear for the distribution in smaller islands, these have been checked using separate literature, as visible below. Smaller countries are sometimes less studied and can lack a checklist. So, for Monaco, Andorra and Liechtenstein, the species distribution is expected to be very similar to the neighboring countries. Next to the recorded species, the common species from neighboring countries are also included due to the high chance of encountering vagrants. Next to the likely occurrences, the overseas British territory of Gibraltar has an increased chance for vagrants, crossing the nearby Strait of Gibraltar. All of these have been included in the matrix for Gibraltar, but their occurrence is not fully certain. 

In Corsica, the distribution of two species still needs to be confirmed: Pipistrellus nathusii and Nyctalus noctule. Furthermore, a new species has recently been described here in the Myotis nattereri complex: Myotis nustrale, a Corsican endemic (Puechmaille et al, 2023). Due to the recent addition to science, this one is not included in the distribution matrix. 
A new species may soon be described in the Pipistrellus kuhlii complex; Pipistrelluslepidus, on the eastern side of the distribution range.
In the Hypsugo savii complex, a new species is suggested for Sicily and parts of Sardinia: Hypsugo darwini. Similarly,the Plecotus auritus complex might be split, resulting in the Iberian species being renamed to Plecotus begognae.</gettingStarted>
