<abstract>
            A distribution matrix of Orthoptera was created for all 43 European countries except Russia, and with regional resolution in Spain, Italy, Greece, and France. All 1128 European Orthoptera species have been included, with their occurrences marked as present (1) or absent (0) in all regions.

        <purpose>The aim of this matrix is to support the bioacoustics recognition model insectecho-v1
(github.com/bghani/insectecho-v1).</purpose>
        <introduction>The aim of this matrix is to support an acoustic model, but it also includes all non-stridulating species. This way, it can also be used for other purposes. The Orthoptera Species File (OSF) has been used as a taxonomical backbone, which follows the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN).
It is based on the most recent checklist for European species of Orthoptera (Odé et al, 2026) with information on the occurrence for each country taken from Hochkirch et al. (2016). Distribution information for species present in Odé et al. (2026) but absent in Hochkirch et al. (2016) is based on Orthoptera Species File (Cigliano et al. 2026).</introduction>
        <gettingStarted><para>For most of Europe the distribution is indicated at country level. For areas with a high number of often regionally distributed species (Spain, France, Italy, and Greece) the presence and absence are indicated on a regional level. For Spain and Italy the distribution is indicated on the level of the largest administrative divisions, the comunidades autónomas in Spain and the Regioni d’Italia. For Greece the distribution is indicated for six regions (North, Central, Peloponnese, Crete, Ionian Islands and Aegean Islands). In order to indicate the distribution in France the French departments have been split into five regions (Alps, Pyrenees, Provence, Corsica and rest).

Distribution information for Italy is based on the data from Massa et al (2012) with updates provided by Roy Kleukers. The distribution in Spain is based on an unpublished distribution database build in 2025 by Olga Fernández Hernández & Florent Prunier (Fernández Hernández & Prunier 2025). Distribution information for Greece is based on Willemse et al., (2018). For France, the information is based on records available on GBIF.org which were validated using Sardet et al., (2024).</para></gettingStarted>
