Description

LBBG_IJMUIDEN - Lesser black-backed gulls (Larus fuscus, Laridae) breeding in IJmuiden (the Netherlands) is a bird tracking dataset published by the University of Amsterdam and the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It contains animal tracking data for the study LBBG_IJMUIDEN using trackers developed by the University of Amsterdam Bird Tracking System (UvA-BiTS, http://www.uva-bits.nl). The study has been operational since 2019. In total 30 adult individuals of lesser black-backed gull (Larus fuscus) have been tagged in their breeding area on Forteiland, an island in IJmuiden harbour in the Netherlands. Data from 11 additionally tagged juveniles are not included. The main goal of the study is to identify intrinsic and external drivers of movement from fine scale flight behaviour to seasonal migrations and to study their flight behaviour and habitat use in and around offshore wind parks in the North Sea. Data are uploaded from the UvA-BiTS database to Movebank and from there archived on Zenodo (see https://github.com/inbo/bird-tracking). Data collected since 2021 are not publicly available.These data were collected by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). Fieldwork was supported by the IJmuiden gull team: Fred Cottaar, Jose Verbeek, Maarten van Kleiwee and Mars Musse. Management of UvA-BiTS field stations and tracker settings was supported by Willem Bouten and Edwin Baaij. Permission to access the colony was provided by PBN. The research infrastructure was supported by LifeWatch, SURF Foundation and the Dutch national e-science centre (NLeSC) and carried out on the Dutch national e-infrastructure with the support of SURF Cooperative. The dataset was published with funding from Stichting NLBIF - Netherlands Biodiversity Information Facility.Data have been standardized to Darwin Core using the movepub R package and are subsampled to the first GPS position per hour. The original data are available in Shamoun-Baranes et al. (2026, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20706437), a deposit of Movebank study 8872890087.
