Description

This dataset contains the 2012 Dutch Red List of vascular plants, which assesses the extinction risk of native and archaeophytic plant species in the Netherlands. The assessment follows the IUCN Red List criteria adapted for national use and provides a scientifically grounded basis for conservation policy, biodiversity monitoring, and habitat management. It was originally published as: L.B. Sparrius, B. Odé & R. Beringen, 2014. Basisrapport Rode Lijst Vaatplanten 2012 volgens Nederlandse en IUCN-criteria. FLORON Rapport 57. FLORON, Nijmegen.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,432 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Taxon (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Only native species which reproduce and establish new populations in the Netherlands were considered. Non-native species and vagrants were not included.

Study Extent The conservation status of all 1432 native vascular plants of the Netherlands was assessed according to the IUCN criteria, and additionally the Dutch criteria.

Method step description:

  1. The Red List is compiled by calculating the rarity and long-term trends of species for the Dutch criteria. A species is considered a Red List species when it adheres both to the trend (t) and rarity (z) criteria, or if it adheres to one of the two criteria in great extent. The criteria are applied to both the spread/dispersion (v) and the number of reproducing individuals. This results in the following criteria: population trend (tn; trend in number of reproducing individuals), dispersion trend (tv; trend in spread of reproducing individuals), rarity based on number (zn), and rarity based on dispersion (zv).
  2. The spread/dispersion is expressed as the percentage of surface area of the Netherlands. It is assumed that this includes 1,674 atlas grid squares of 5 × 5 km. The classes are defined as follows: 0 atlas grids (x), 1-16 atlas grids (zzz), 17-83 atlas grids (zz), 84-108 atlas grids (z), and more than 209 atlas grids (a).
  3. The trend and rarity criteria leads to the Dutch Red List categories (with the corresponding regional IUCN categories): VN (verdwenen in Nederland; Regionally Extinct), EB (ernstig bedreigd; Critically Endangered), BE (bedreigd; Endangered), KW (kwetsbaar; Vulnerable), GE (gevoelig; Near Threatened). There are three non-Red List categories: TNB (thans niet bedreigd; Least Concern), OG (onvoldoende gegevens; Data Deficient), and NB (niet beschouwd; Not Evaluated). In extreme cases there are three additional categories: VNW (in het wild verdwenen; -), UWW (in het wild uitgestorven op wereldschaal; Extinct in the Wild), and UW (uitgestorven op wereldschaal; Extinct).
