Since 2019, Taxon Expeditions has organized 'urban expeditions' in greenspaces in Amsterdam, the aim of which has been to form teams of both community scientists from the neighbourhood and professional biodiversity experts and to carry out high-quality explorations of invertebrates of urban greenspaces. Each 'expedition' entailed training for the community scientists in field methods for biodiversity sampling and techniques for preserving, studying, and identifying invertebrates. Each expedition also yielded large numbers of specimens that were worked up into permanent collection specimens and identified by the participating experts. The results were published in reports and papers, partly authored with the community scientists. We now have a rich baseline of invertebrates from these greenspaces, which reveal important ecological patterns. This digitization of the data, with particular emphasis on the soil invertebrates, provides a baseline from these greenspaces.

This dataset contains records of shorebirds that are captured, ringed and measured with mistnets on the mudflats in the Dutch Wadden Sea at Schiermonnikoog. Dataset includes the sampling event and the record of the caught shorebird species. Please note that the data are published for documenting occurrences and are not recommended for capture–recapture or life history analyses. For more information or to discuss availability for these types of analyses, please contact the authors. Most commonly used biometric measures of wild birds will be add in the future as Measurements of Facts (MoF) and contain: Wing length, Mass, Bill Length, Total Head Length, Tarsus length, Primary score, body moult index and plumage cover. The MoF is not yet available online but will be available during 2026 (contact the authors for use of biometric data).

The Field Study Group is a branch of the Dutch Mammal Society (Zoogdiervereniging) is focused on field studies and aims to keep up the knowledge on mammal identification and mammal survey techniques up to date, as well as to exchange and spread this knowledge to its members and others.

This dataset includes observations of insects and other arthropods by Roel van Klink and Corinna Rickert. The data were collected in various ways, including pitfall trapping, light trapping, but above all sweep netting. The taxonomic focus is on plant-and leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha), jumping plant lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea), ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and bees (Hymenoptera: Antophila), but many other taxa are also present in the data. Most events are based on unstandardized sweepnet sampling, aimed at finding as many species as possible (aiming at Auchenorrhyncha and Psylloidea), but there data from several biodiversity related projects are also included, in which sampling was done in a standardized way, using pitfall traps, timed counts and other methods. These projects all have higher level groupings, described as parent events. These usually group all samples taken together in a certain location. The highest level parentEvent is the project-level.

The dataset contains sampling data of 100 pitfalls that were collected weekly in the Meijendel dune area from March 1953 until March 1960. The dataset contains more than 250 beetle species together with a number of mammal species. The research was done by the Animal Ecology and Plant Ecology group of Leiden University. In particular, drs. G.J. de Bruyn throughout the years has made much effort to empty the pitfalls, identify specimens. In addition, he acted as custodian of the specimen collections and archival records until these could be digitized.

Pitfalls were placed in groups of three in replicates of the same set of habitats, running along a gradient from open vegetation dominated by low vegetation (<5cm) and bare sand, through to various stands of woods, groves and shrub dominated vegetations. More details will be published as supplementary material in a data paper

Herbarium with 105 preserved specimens on separate sheets. The specimens were collected by S.V.D. missionary Martin Gusinde (1886 - 1969) between 1922 and 1924, during various research trips to the south of Chile. Locations where he collected specimens from are Canal Smyth (Chile) and in Tierra del Fuego along Canal Beagle (Remolino - Argentina & Navarino - Chile).

The formation of the collected specimens into an herbarium dates from a later, unknown, period. This can be concluded from the reference numbers not corresponding with the years in a chronological manner.

Gusinde was in contact with many botanists and scientists around the world, especially with Carl Skottsberg (1880-1963). The are multiple herbaria collected by Gusinde around the world.

The herbarium was researched in May 2023 by Daniela Salazar Rodríguez (Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile) in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Tinde van Andel (Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Netherlands).

Camera trap pilot 2 was a test of the difference in species detection and data accumulation between a Snyper Commander camera with a regular lens (52°) and one with a wide lens (100°). The cameras were deployed at 30 cm above the ground within the herbivore exclosure Zeeveld Noord in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes from 14th of August 2021 to 24th of September 2021. During this pilot, a solar panel failure caused the cameras to stop recording data from the 24th of August 2021 to the 6th of September (14 days). During annotation, only days in which both cameras were operational were annotated. This led to a total of 1,113 images over 28 days from the two cameras. Camera trapping pilot 3 was a test of the effect of lens angle, as well as a test of the influence of camera height and being deployed outside herbivore exclosures (security, herbivore damage, more varied habitat types). At each of three locations (all in the area Westweg of the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes), both a regular lens Snyper Commander camera (52°) and a wide lens Wilsus Tradenda camera (100°) were deployed (n = 6 cameras). The cameras were placed at different heights at each location (30 cm, 40 cm and 50 cm above the ground). A month of data from this pilot was annotated, from 1st March 2023 to 31st of March 2023. This led to a total of 16,020 annotated images over 31 days from six cameras. This camera trap pilot 1 was primarily focused on testing camera deployment, data accumulation and data transmission (4G coverage) in a remote dune location of the Netherlands. Three Snyper Commander cameras were deployed from August 13th 2021 to August 2023 (approx. 747 days). The three cameras were placed within exclosures (locations Zilkerpad, van Limburgstirum Vallei and Wolfsveld in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes), at 30 cm above the ground. All images from 14th of August 2021 until 31st of December 2022 were annotated, with a total of 30,464 images over 505 days from the three cameras. MijnVISmaat - Exotic fish occurrences in Belgium is an occurrence dataset published by the Royal Dutch Angling Federation and the Flemish Research Institute of Nature and Forest (INBO). It contains alien freshwater fish occurrences recorded through MijnVISmaat, a mobile application used by anglers for catch registration. This app was developed and managed by the Royal Dutch Angling Association (Sportvisserij Nederland: https://www.sportvisserijnederland.nl/). With this app anglers register their catches with a smartphone to create their personal logbook of catches with location, species, length, weight, bait, depth and photos. The app also provides a social platform to share catches and information with fellow anglers. The dataset is part of an effort to mobilize alien species data for Belgium. Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each record an occurrenceID, date, location, sampling protocol, the number of recorded individuals, status (present/absent) and scientific name. Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/inbo/mijnvismaat-occurrences

This dataset contains the results of the yearly summer camp of the Field Study Group (Dutch Mammal Society), organized from July 28th to August 7th 2004 in Rakitovec, Slovenia. The mammals of Rakitovec and its surroundings were the main object of study, using various methods. Live traps and small batches of owl pellets were used to identify small mammals like shrews and mice. Data on bats was gathered with bat detectors and mistnets. Bat parasites were collected from all bats captured and identified afterwards. Other mammal species were observed visually. While recording mammals, attention was given to insects (butterflies, dragonflies and grasshoppers), amphibians, reptiles and birds as well. Locations were recorded with GPS.

The principal herbarium is that of A. de Wever (1874-1947) of Nuth. In 1912, de Wever was one of the founding members of the Natuurhistorisch Genootschap in Limburg. Between 1890 and 1943 he collected plants from the whole of southern Limburg, a collection which, by its being well-documented, ranks amongst the most important regional herbariums in The Netherlands. On the basis of this herbarium detailed studies into the flora and vegetation at the start of this century could be carried out. The de Wever Herbarium consists of c. 20,000 paper covers with a total of some 60,000 specimens. Of the smaller herbariums those of J.L. Rieter and L. Grégoire are of importance. Part of the collection are also a few pharmacist herbariums, the principal one of which is the mosses herbarium of 1770 of the Maastricht chemist J.L. Franquinet.

Since 2007 every winter a count is organised by Waarneming.nl in order to monitor the dynamics of the Great Grey Shrike populations in The Netherlands in a number of dedicated areas. Volunteer bird watchers select their own area and every winter they count twice, in December and in late January / early February. Also the absence of Great Grey Shrikes was noted (0 counts). The results of these yearly counts are captured in maps that show the presence / absence of these birds (http://waarneming.nl/tel_project_new/gmap/258). For this dataset, covering the winter of 2012/ 2013, in total 161 individual birds were monitored in 154 areas. The dataset contains multiple counts per individual.

The collection includes a large number of insects and spiders. The main collections are the Lepidoptera collection (among others Maassen, Lücker, Rootbeen, Baltus), Erich Wasmann’s collection of Formicidae, Isoptera, myrmecophiles and termitophiles, and the Coleoptera collection (for example Poot). Indigenous material was mostly collected in Limburg (Southern Netherlands), foreign material was either collected by collectors who left their collections to the NHMM or it was sent to them because of their recognised expertise in their field or as exchange material. Most of the material in the collection was collected in the twentieth century, though the Wasmann collection (not yet digitized) also contains a significant amount of 19th century material.

The Limnodata Neerlandica data set contains the data of more than 30 years systematic and project based sampling of Dutch, mainly freshwater, waterbodies. Data originate from 37 data providers; 26 water boards, the provinces and the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. Over 20,000 sample points were used. The main purpose of the dataset is monitoring the quality of Dutch surface waters. Next to the biological characteristics also a-biotic data were sampled and stored alongside the biotic data. Observations are available from phytoplankton, diatoms, aquatic and riparian plants, macro-invertebrates and fish. The data were collected on a yearly base. The taxonomy has been validated according to the Dutch standardised checklist of aquatic species. Update January 2015: Added data for 2011 and 2012. Enhanced taxonomic and locality data fields.
